The American Numismatic Association (ANA) confers its Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of outstanding contributions to organized numismatics.
First conferred in 1992, the Lifetime Achievement Award is present ed to individuals, families, firms or judicial entities for service to the hobby. The 2002 recipient is George Fuld.
George Fuld of Owings Mills, Maryland, who last year received his 50-year ANA medal, is deserving of this honor because of his many contributions to and achievements in the field of numismatics. Fuld served as President of the Society of Tokens, Medals and Obsolete Paper Money for two years in the early 1960s before it divided into the Token and Medal Society (TAMS) and the Society of Paper Money Collectors. He later served as editor of TAMS Journal, and his portrait was placed on a TAMS medal in recognition of his hard work and dedication to the publication.
Fuld has presented hundreds of programs at numismatic functions and contributed countless articles to club publications over the years. Fuld's father, Melvin, also was an avid collector and well known to hobbyists and collectors alike. At one time Fuld and his father owned the majority of the 1860-1864 Civil War tokens, and they wrote a column on the subject for the ANA's monthly journal, The Numismatist.
Even though he worked in the field as a dealer, he is best known as one of the greatest collectors of numismatic literature and Civil War tokens. Among the many reference works he has written are A Guide to U.S. Civil War Tokens, Patriotic Civil War Tokens and U.S. Civil War Store Cards, the last he co-authored with his father.
In bestowing its Lifetime Achievement Award, the American
Numismatic Association expresses the sincere appreciation of its
members to George Fuld.
